ABOUT
Highfields and District Little Athletics Centre (HDLA) was founded in 2007 and provides a service to the families of Highfields and surrounding District by offering athletics for children between the ages of under 6 to under 17. The centre also offers a Tiny Tots program to children aged either 3 and 4 years with a modified play and training program.
Where we meet
Competitions will normally be held from 8.15am on Saturday mornings at Kratzke Oval, Highgrove Drive Highfields.
Our 2023/24 season commences 9th September 2023 and finishes in March 2023, with a break over the school holidays and New Year period. (See Club Calendar for dates)
We commence at 8:15am each Saturday morning (some twilight meets are included in the calendar) and events will be broken up depending on the weekly program. Skill development sessions will be included for under 6 to under 8 age groups. Tiny tots will have 1 hour of play training.
All athletes are encouraged to attend the warm up. This is to reduce the risk of injury when competing in other events.
It is recommended that athletes compete in all events offered to their age group.
Each athlete's program will be available in Results HQ prior to competition each week and in the age group folder on competition day.
What is Little Athletics?
Little Athletics is a uniquely Australian sport for children 5-17 years, as well as tiny tots for 3 and 4 year olds. It is based upon the sport of athletics (track & field) and the events are specially modified to suit the ages and abilities of children. A wide range of running, jumping, throwing and walking events are conducted.
Little Athletics is the Foundation for all Sports. It offers young people activities and skills that will stand them in good stead for their sporting future.
The motto of Little Athletics is “Family, Fun and Fitness”. This highlights that we are a community activity involving the whole family on a weekly basis.
Family - Family involvement is vital for the success of Little Athletics. The registered athlete participates in the track and field events, while parents, grandparents and siblings are involved as officials, recorders, event helpers, coaches or committee members.
Fun - The level of competition is whatever the family wants it to be – whether participation is on Centre competition days only, training sessions, or at various competitions and carnivals held throughout the season. Each child is encouraged to improve their own performances, not necessarily be the best in the age group.
Fitness - By participating at weekly meetings, children are contributing to their own active lifestyle.
Parents/guardians also get fresh air and are active as they assist with activities.
Philosophy
The philosophy of the Little Athletics movement is summed up in the slogan:
"LITTLE ATHLETICS...FOR...FAMILY...FUN...and...FITNESS"
Little Athletics is more than a sport. It is a community-oriented organisation which enables the entire family to do something together.
Parents are involved in the program as voluntary helpers or officials. They share in many experiences with the children.
Little Athletics provides a vital communication bridge between parent and child. This link can have benefits far beyond the years spent in the centre. Society has, increasingly, produced subtle and damaging pressures on family and community relationships. The FAMILY CONCEPT approach to programming counteracts those pressures.
